BUT, when on desktop (like in the screenshot), I want them side-by-side like in my layout. It seems adding flex into my custom css won't cut it. Any suggestions?

Do as I wrote above - add a full article image and a text via Joomla means. And provide the link. Only in screenshots it is not possible to help. No one knows the code by heart. And the code depends on the template.

All that you want is easy to do
